Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes

I just saw this video post of Ricky Gervais‘ opening monologue at the Golden Globe awards.

A great many people seem to have missed the point, most notably Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Phillip Berk who has stated that Gervais “crossed the line” and that he would not be invited back to host the show next year.

Apparently Mr. Berk hasn’t heard that Gervais publicly stated that he didn’t want to host the show again and that he viewed the fact he was invited back as proof that he didn’t do a good enough job the last time. In short: he went out to deliberately shock the audience and the H.F.P.A.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to those of us familiar with Gervais’ brand of comedy. That combined with the fact that we British are inherently sarcastic and cynical should have provided Mr. Berk and his colleagues with all the fair warning that they needed. As Gervais himself pointed out during the monologue, “I warned ’em.”

Personally, I think Gervais was spot on with his observations and it was well past time that these ceremonies had the air taken out of them a little bit. They often come across as pompous, self-congratulatory events that need to be reminded not to take themselves so seriously.

The general public certainly doesn’t.
